These kelp baskets were made by the girls at school recently. They
were traditionally made by Tasmanian aboriginal (palawa) women
to carry water and as drinking receptacles
I've always wanted to learn how to make them ~ we have palawa
ancestry on my father's side of the family. We will have a go at
making more baskets in the summer holidays
More information can be found in this beautiful book "Keeping Culture"
This is an example of a water carrier which was made by Lola
Greeno who's exquisite shell necklaces are world renowned.
